John Flynn w/ Ann Heaton
Songwriter
and activist John Flynn calls himself a “hopeful pessimist”.
The
pessimism comes from an honest clear-eyed assessment of the
condition of the world we live in.
The hope comes from a deep-rooted faith in the beauty and
resilience of the human spirit. In an artist of Flynn’s
caliber, the tension inherent in these seemingly contradictory
points of view yields the kind of songs that moved Kris
Kristofferson to compare Flynn to the best writers he knows, and
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to boast “John Flynn is the John Lennon of
the plasma generation!”
John
sings from the heart.
His powerful songs of humanity and hope are deeply rooted in
the tradition of Woody Guthrie.
From barbed
political verse to
joyous fun-loving
lyrics for kids, John paints vivid, lasting
images with words and music drawn from a palate of awareness, irony,
humor, and compassion.
Boston-based
singer-songwriter/piano-player Anne Heaton will released Blazing Red
in March. With her joyous spirit, warm voice and
spacious piano playing, Heaton has been called "more of a
storyteller than Norah Jones and definitely in the same category as
far as talent and vocal range" (Newspapertaxi.com).
After winning Soul City Cafe
-- a national songwriting and live performance competition -- Anne
was invited to tour the west coast with major label recording artist
Jewel. She has also shared the stage with Melissa Ferrick,
HEM, Jill Sobule, and Jonatha Brooke.
"The title 'Blazing Red'
comes from the very first song I wrote for the album. The idea that
ultimately, you are your soul and not the roles you play and
therefore when you want to make changes in your life, you can
connect to this power. The image of a setting sun came to mind. Like
your soul, the sun is always there, constant, whether it's night
time or cloudy, it is there and you can connect to its power for
strength."

"John
Flynn has committed himself to a life of service and songs for and
about "the lost and the lonely, the shackled and
scarred." His work in prisons, rehabs, and half-way houses is
distilled into the truth and the beauty of these heartfelt and
heart warming slices of life. America's Waiting is a great album,
distinguished by its courage and sincerity. The Prodigal Father is
a perfect song. And I recited Without You with Me in the eulogy at
Stephen Bruton's funeral. This is an important album by an
important artist." - Kris Kristofferson
"Anne Heaton's songs are nothing if not evocative. Possessing
a guided passion that never missteps, she brings you close enough
to the fire to feel its warmth and see the excitement but never
close enough to get burned. Heaton has a multi-textured approach
to songs and songwriting, much like one of her heroes, Peter
Gabriel." - Cincinnati Citybeat
